Battle of Britain to decide Bronze Medal match

Alan Clyne and Greg Lobban have vowed to fight hard for the Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the Men’s Doubles event after an 11-8, 11-5 defeat to Australia in the semi-finals earlier today.

David Palmer and Zac Alexander delighted the home crowd on the show court at Oxenford Studios as they edged a close first game against the second seeds.

The Aussies then played some inspired squash from 0-3 down in the second to claiming their place in the final in just over 30 minutes.

Lobban said: “They played well and we couldn’t quite find the answers today.

“We always knew they were going to be tough and they had the home crowd.

“They’ve got experience and David is obviously a former world number one. They’re a formidable force.”

There’s plenty still on the line for Lobban and Clyne and Team Scotland as they look to secure Scotland’s first Games squash medal since 1998 in tomorrow’s Bronze Medal match.

It will be an all British clash against England’s James Willstrop and Declan James who lost an epic semi-final to their compatriots Daryl Selby and Adrian Waller in sudden death after 87 minutes, 11-9, 9-11, 11-10.

Selby and Waller came from 7-9 down to take the first game, then in the decider saved two match balls before finally taking the win on a ‘no let’ to the opposition.

Sunday’s Bronze Medal match is at 11am Gold Coast time (2am UK time).

The match will be broadcast on the BBC website and on digital TV via the red button.

Looking ahead to the match, Clyne said: “It’s not what we wanted but it’s what we’re going to have.

“We’re definitely going to fight with everything we’ve got and will be going hard for bronze tomorrow.”

Lobban added: “We will be fighting every step of the way for it.”
