The Scottish Squash Moment of the Year 2022 revealed
2022 was an incredible year for squash in Scotland. There was success at all levels of the game for individuals, doubles pairings and teams.
That meant there were 12 nominees for the Scottish Squash Moment of the Year 2022, which was put to a vote of squash fans in Scotland.
As we approach the end of the year, we can now reveal the top 3 Scottish Squash Moments of the Year, as voted for by members of the Scottish squash community.
3. Robin Ridley and Ian Ross win silver medals at the World Masters Squash Championships in Poland
The third-place moment was the tremendous double medal success at the World Masters in Wroclaw.
Ian Ross capped an excellent year with a silver medal, after overcoming three tough opponents on the way to second place.
The Grange Veteran was beaten by top seed Brian Cook in the final, which secured his place as the second best O75 squash player in the world.
Robin Ridley won silver in the O65 competition, after a bruising run of four and five game matches on the way to the final.
The Dumfries Squash and Racketball Club stalwart clinched his first medal at a World Masters Championship.
For him – and the whole Scottish squash community – this was a moment to remember.
2. Rory Stewart pulls off major upset to beat Patrick Rooney in Commonwealth Games epic
The second-place moment was the major upset pulled off by Rory Stewart at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
At the time, Rory was world ranked 66 and this match against the world ranked 24 looked to have a clear winner – on paper at least.
The Scot had other ideas, as he triumphed in a five game 74 minute epic, which ranks as one of the great Commonwealth Games squash matches.
The highlight of the match was an almost unbelievable run of eight points in a row which drove Rory to victory.
This was a huge win which generated lots of excitement for sports fans in Scotland.
1. Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart win doubles bronze at Commonwealth Games
The Scottish Squash Moment of the Year 2022 was the stunning bronze medal win in Birmingham.
Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart ended the 24 year wait for a Scottish squash medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The duo stormed to victory over Malaysia in the bronze medal match, much to the delight of the large Scottish contingent in the crowd.
The victory came on the final day of the Commonwealth Games, and topped off 11 days of top quality squash action, filled with high points for all Team Scotland squash stars.
This was a moment that will live long in the memory of Scottish squash fans!
