Springfield Scottish Squash Open returns to Inverness for another year
The Springfield Scottish Squash Open is heading back to the Highland capital this year with the continued support of Springfield Properties, one of Scotland’s leading home builders.
Scotland’s flagship PSA Challenger Tour event will be held at the Inverness Tennis and Squash Club in September 2023, bringing together some the world’s top upcoming players.
Springfield Properties partnered with Scottish Squash, the sport’s national governing body, at the inaugural Scottish Open at the Oriam, Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre, in 2019. They continued their support in 2021, when the Open headed North to Inverness for the first time.
The 2021 Springfield Scottish Squash Open reached new heights, hosting 46 players from 13 countries, and attracting hundreds of spectators. With the support of EventScotland, the finals were streamed live on the BBC for the first time, raising the profile of the tournament and giving the sport greater visibility nationwide. This year’s tournament promises to be even bigger as squash continues to grow across Scotland.
Sandy Adam, Executive Chairman of Springfield Properties said:
“We’re delighted to support the tournament once again in Inverness. We have supported Scottish Squash for a number of years, and this includes the return of the Scottish Squash Open to help boost the sport across Scotland.
“The last competition was a great success with some of the world’s best players competing for the title while creating a platform for younger squash players to play at this level – we’re looking forward to seeing what this year’s competition holds.”
Maggie Still, Chief Executive of Scottish Squash continued:
“The Inverness Tennis & Squash Club is a fantastic venue for a PSA Challenger Tour event, situated in a lovely part of Scotland. It has been a terrific home for the 2021 Springfield Scottish Squash Open. We have been impressed by the commitment of the staff team and volunteers at the venue, in providing a first-class experience for some of the world’s upcoming squash players, from the moment they arrive on site.
We are therefore delighted to be returning to Inverness in September 2023 with this event and continue to be grateful to our headline partner, Springfield Properties for underpinning this event.
We have no doubt that Inverness Tennis & Squash Club will again provide the perfect stage and look forward to welcoming athletes and spectators across the week.”
The prize fund for the 2023 Springfield Scottish Squash Open is $20,000 (USD), and as for all previous tournaments, will be split equally between male and female players.
Sanctioned by the Professional Squash Association (PSA), the Springfield Scottish Squash Open will be held in Inverness over five days between the 20th and 24th September. Some of Scotland’s rising stars will be aiming to take centre stage at the event, including the prodigious talents of Alasdair Prott.
Alasdair is one of Inverness’ home-grown talents and having excelled in the junior rankings as nine times Scottish Junior Champion, now competes in the PSA senior tour, as well as representing his country. Alasdair has had a stellar 12 months having reached three 5K semi-finals and won the Oban and Heriot Watt satellite events. He’s feeling confident going into Scotland’s premier squash tournament.
He said: “The Springfield Scottish Squash Open is a special tournament as its one of the few chances to play PSA level squash in Scotland. Its extra special for me as the tournament heads back to my hometown for the second time. The atmosphere will be electric and I’m looking forward to having the support of friends and family behind me.
The tournament in 2021 was a big success, and a great opportunity for youngsters to watch professional squash in their back yard. It’s a great spectacle for the younger generation to witness and no doubt inspires many to take up the game. We’re all looking forward to putting on a show in September.”
The Springfield Scottish Squash Open is one of the highlights of the PSA Challenger Tour. The Challenger Tour is where the world’s emerging talent ply their trade in the hope of breaking into the World Tour, the premier league of world squash. The PSA hosts over 200 competitions across the globe, where star players compete for prize money of up to $500,000 per tournament.
