Progression Reffin’ launched to encourage youngsters to try officiating
Scotland’s young squash players are being encouraged to consider giving officiating a try following the launch of the Progression Reffin’ programme.
The initiative is dedicated to empowering and engaging youngsters aged between 14 and 35 to take their first steps in refereeing.
And the initiative aims to create opportunities for young people to develop their skills and confidence, on and off court while contributing to the continued development of squash.
Course ambassador Steffan Gwyn, a European level referee said: “Refereeing has given me several opportunities to travel across Europe and meet new people from all over the world with the same passion for squash as me.
“It has opened many doors, and this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved with squash up to the professional level.”
Course ambassador Nik Adriana Aida, a student at Edinburgh University who refereed at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 said: “Refereeing has been a gateway to building lasting connections and unleashing personal, intellectual, and social growth within a passionate sports community.”
Participants will complete their Level 1 and 2 World Squash Officiating courses, attend an in-person workshop with a world-class professional referee and get an exclusive t-shirt – all at no cost.
During the course, the youngsters will officiate 20 matches, with a peer group being developed to provide support and build friendships.
While developing refereeing skills and confidence, participants will also have the opportunity to support the delivery of some of Scotland’s top squash events.
With just under 10% of Scotland’s referee workforce under 35, the course aims to create a new group of officials to support the continued growth of squash.
Billy McLafferty, Progression Reffin’ Lead said: “Getting involved in refereeing is really important for player development as it gives them the opportunity to experience the game from a different perspective.
“Progression Reffin’ is an excellent opportunity for players and coaches to develop their skills and contribute toward the future of the sport”.
