MHI Team Report 2024

Check out the full report from the Women’s Over 50s team who travelled to Dublin on 26-27th April.

This year was all about doing our best and maximising fun. After a long morning of travelling & landing with a (vertebrae jarring) thud in Ireland, picking up a couple of waifs and strays in our taxi (Rob & Ian from O70’s!) , our first match on Fri was versus Ireland.  There was good squash from everyone in the team, all played in great spirit with Jo playing her inaugural MHI match and Julia playing her socks off to take a game off Orla.

On Saturday morning, we were delighted to see some of the Welsh tucking into big breakfasts thinking it might slow them down on the court but unfortunately not the case. High lob serves seemed to be the effective Welsh tactics and despite some great matches and a tough 5-setter for Donna, Scotland were over-powered.

Last match was against England who put out a full strength team. Some great games but they were just too strong and earned their much deserved victory. What Scotland couldn’t make up for on the court was made up for off-court: gate-crashing a surprise 80th party & receiving an invite to return for cake, leading the dancing on the veranda (Jen meeting a challenge from Sue Strachan)  and dancing into the night with all the other teams.

It was a fantastic weekend of being re-acquainted with old friends and making new friends, lots of fun and laughter and already looking forward to the next one.

Thanks to Irish Squash for their organisation, Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club for fantastic facilities / catering & the Mespil Hotel for accommodation.  Thanks also to all the Scottish, Irish, Welsh & English teams for making it the weekend it was.
