First-timers look to make their mark in Masters National Championship
Thirteen national champions are set to be crowned at this weekend’s Scottish Masters National Championships 2024, taking place at Edinburgh Sports Club.
A cornerstone in Scotland’s squash calendar, this year’s event has attracted a bumper entry of over 75 competitors, with players of all ages – from 35 to 80 represented in the draw.
Masters events attract a diverse range of players, with this year’s event no different.
Among those taking part are multiple-times former champions, Scotland internationals and those playing in their first ever Masters events who will be welcomed warmly at the event.
One of those playing in his first Masters National Championship, and indeed first Masters event is Dunbar Squash Club’s Ross Stisi, competing in the Men’s Over 40s.
Having played squash for many years, Ross has dedicated more time to his game recently, adding coaching sessions with former professional Lisa McKenna to his routine, and is hoping the competition will give him an opportunity to test himself against the best.
Ross said: “It’s all about improving my game for me, I’m putting in a lot of time on court because I do want to push my game on.
“I’m not expecting anything other than probably getting a lesson or two from some of the best players in Scotland, but to actually go out there and see where the benchmark is something I’m really going to enjoy.”
His enthusiasm and positive attitude are clear – and infectious – and while competitive squash might not be for everyone, the enthusiastic player would encourage everyone to have a go.
He said: “What’s the worst that can happen?
“You might get beaten, but you’re going to play some really competitive squash, have a good time and you’ll get to watch a lot of top players up close and personal – maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two.”
Another first timer in this year’s event is Bridge of Allan’s Sheena Logan, who will compete in the O35/40 competition.
Having represented Scotland in the Masters Home Internationals, this will be her second domestic competition in age-restricted competition.
For Sheena, Masters squash is all about friendship, fun and catching up with old acquaintances.
She said: “I’ve started competing again because it’s something that I did for myself.
“You play as a junior and then life gets in the way and you’ve got to work, you have kids, so just being able to go and play in a tournament and concentrate on yourself is one of the main appeals.”
The squash ace was also encouraged by friends to play more squash, and ultimately make the decision to take on the nation’s best.
Sheena added: “Masters squash is brilliant when you come across people that you haven’t played for a long time – for example, I’m looking forward to seeing Lizzie Little this weekend as we played a lot as juniors and haven’t played for years.
“Last year when I played against Ireland, I played against someone that I played against 20 years ago and hadn’t seen since – so that was brilliant.”
From self-improvement, to fun and friendship, the pursuit of glory and a love of squash – the reasons for taking part are varied, but the action will be the best on offer in the country this weekend.
Each of the thirteen draws will have intrigue, and a plethora of stories to be told, with key talking points across the age groups.
The Men’s Over 70 will feature some of the Scottish greats, including Emilio Fazzi, Robert Thompson and current European O75 Champion Ian Ross.
The O50 competition is sure to be hotly contested, with Montrose Squash Club’s Peter Buchan and Aberdeen Squash and Racketball Club’s Keith Simpson second and first seeds respectively.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s draw, last year’s Over 55 champion Rosie Wilson will look to come out on top in the Over 60s category against Bernie Beattie and Sue Strachan.
Six women will compete for the O35/40 title, with Lizzie Little and Sheena Logan expected to lead the running for that crown.
A top weekend of squash is in store, with the action getting underway on Saturday morning.
