Five reasons to consider joining a squash team this year
With squash leagues getting underway across Scotland this month, perhaps you’ve noticed a flurry of activity on your club’s social media, or perhaps you’ve overheard conversations about “home games”, “away games” and “who’s bringing the food?”
Joining a team in a multi-club squash league is often a natural next step for players that have mastered the basics – or at least, mastered some of them!
With that in mind, here at five reasons why you might want to consider joining a team in a multi-club squash league.
Take your game to the next level
Going along to squash coaching and playing squash with friends is a great way to improve and experiment with your squash game.
League games encourage you to use your skills under pressure. With most teams playing several fixtures over the season, that will give you lots of chances to use your backhand, boasts and volleys in matches to try to get some points on the board for your team.
Find competitive games
We all know that squash can be frustrating at times. Sometimes you get the wrong opponent, and even returning the ball can be difficult.
Sanctioned squash leagues range from those for the very best players, such as the Scottish National League, to those for beginners and fairly new players.
Once you’ve found your team, you will be matched against players of similar ability to ensure competitive games all round!
Make new friends
Maybe you’ve started playing squash but don’t really know anyone else that plays. Maybe you’ve got loads of squash playing friends.
Either way, joining a squash team is a great way to make some new friends that play squash.
From the highs of winning, to the frustration of losing, you’ll experience this all with your team. Aren’t all good friendships based on the shared experience of defeat?
You might make some friends with players in opposing teams too!
Stay fit and healthy
League squash provides a great opportunity to get fit. With the potential for one game a week, that’s sure to be a good workout.
Some players say that being in a league team provides an incentive to keep fit, and keep practising those squash skills.
There’s no doubt that regular squash games are a great way to stay fit, both physically and mentally.
Get an accurate SportyHQ rating
The more games you play, the more accurate your SportyHQ rating will be.
This can be a great tool for finding competitive games, both at your own club and with members from elsewhere.
A regular spot in a league team will ensure that your SportyHQ is representative of your skill level in no time!
All Scottish Squash sanctioned leagues use SportyHQ to track results. That means you’ll also be able to see your performance over time, and look back on the highs and lows of the season whenever you fancy!
Where to begin?
Squash teams in multi-club leagues generally represent a squash club, or play out of a leisure facility.
If you are already a member of a club, why not speak to the club captain, president, or any league players to find out where to begin.
Clubs are always looking for players to join their team.
If you’re not a member of a club, why not use our map to get in touch with a club near you?
