Georgia fulfils childhood dream with Commonwealth Games selection

Georgia Adderley is one of three debutants to be selected for the highly anticipated Commonwealth Games, which takes place in Birmingham from the 28th July to 8th August – she has been on impressive form recently, rising up the PSA rankings and firmly cementing her position as one of professional squash’s rising stars.

Georgia wrote her name in the annals of Scottish squash history when she became the first Scot since Lisa McKenna to win the British Junior title in 2017. She had her breakthrough year on the senior tour in 2021, when she won four titles including finishing second at the Sportwerk Women’s Open in December 2021, moving into the top 60 for the first time. She has continued her stellar form this year with a final place at the Bermuda Open in May, reaching the semi-final of the Karachi Open in Pakistan, before winning her second Scottish National Title in June.

Georgia was selected to represent Scotland at the recent World Doubles Championships in Glasgow, where she delivered a string of top-class performances. Despite it being their first major doubles championships together, Georgia and her doubles partners Lisa Aitken clicked from the start, securing a solid fifth place finish, beating the number 1 seeds Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy from New Zealand along the way. Georgia also performed well with her mixed doubles partner Rory Stewart, securing another fifth-place finish despite being seeded lower.

Georgia has been dreaming of representing Scotland since she was 16 and was delighted to finally get the call. She said:

“I was shocked when I heard I was selected. I knew we were going to find out that week and got I pretty emotional when our coach Paul Bell called to confirm I’d made the team. I’ve been working towards Commonwealth Games selection since I was 15 or 16. My friends and family were excited to hear the news and have been booking tickets ever since.

Representing Scotland is the best feeling and to do it in a multi-sport event in front of the world is so exciting. I’m also looking forward to being part of the wider Scotland team and all the athletes across different sports.

It will also be great to compete again with our successful World Doubles team. We get on so well and I’m looking forward to playing with Lisa and Rory to bring home some medals. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all my coaches and sponsors and to my family and friends for helping and being there through the ups and the downs.”
