Obituary: George Tierney

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of George Tierney, who passed away on Sunday 30th June, 2024.

George will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and we offer deepest condolences to his family and friends.

The Grampian Squash obituary read as follows:

“We are saddened to share the news that our dear friend, longtime & current Grampian Squash committee member, dedicated referee and all round squash enthusiast passed away in hospital last weekend after various health complications.

George not only served on the Grampian committee for decades but also the ASRC committee for 44 years.

He played squash alongside Scottish & World Champions in his playing days and was also a talented badminton player.

He was a passionate, dedicated and successful coach, with an eye for talent and produced Scottish representatives.

George was an accomplished and highly respected referee, participating regularly in Scottish and European events.

Latterly he was encouraging of the future generation of referees and was especially supportive of women in squash.

Grampian Squash will not be the same without him and he will be truly missed. His knowledge of squash seemed infinite and his passion for the game unwavered.

He will be remembered as a true stalwart of Grampian Squash with a love for winding people up and he will be remembered fondly.

Our thoughts are with his children, Clare & Grant at this time.

His funeral will be held at the West Chapel, Hazlehead on Thursday 11th July at 13.15.”
