The Edinburgh Open set to attract world's best in March

“Scotland’s richest squash tournament” will make its return in the capital this March, attracting a field of top Scottish and international players.

The Edinburgh Open 2024 will feature 32 of the world’s top players, competing at Edinburgh Sports Club for their share of a bumper $50,000 prize pot.

With players from the top 10 expected to take part, Scotland’s squash players will have the opportunity to test themselves against the very best.

As entries arrive from around the world, the full line up of stars will be announced at the end of February, with a host of top players already signed up to play.

A graded squash tournament will run alongside the professional event, allowing enthusiastic squash players from across Scotland and the UK to rub shoulders with some of the greats of the game.

Over 50 entries from enthusiastic amateurs have been received in the short time since the announcement, with a field of close to 100 expected.

Speaking as the event was launched, Edinburgh Sports Club Squash Professional Simon Boughton said: “Since its inaugural event in 2001 the championship has gone from strength to strength and the draw continues to amaze me.

“It is incredible to have some of the very best squash players in the world competing here at Edinburgh Sports Club.

“Anyone with an interest in the game really should think about coming along to have a look.

“It is not only a great opportunity for our top players to see how they fare against those at the top of the world game, but we run a graded event alongside it for squash players of all levels.

“It is great spectacle and a real festival of squash.”

Club Manager JJ Tait added: “This event continues to attract some of the world’s highest ranked professional players and gives spectators a wonderful opportunity to watch squash of the highest quality being played here in Edinburgh.”

Last year’s men’s event was won by world number 24 Patrick Rooney, who produced a shock result after beating world number nine Joel Makin in a thrilling final.

The women’s event saw Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world number nine Gina Kennedy beat world number 7 Tinne Gilis.

Entries for the graded competition are open now, with the cost of entry including tickets to watch all the action in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

The Edinburgh Open 2024 will run from the 21^st to the 24^th March 2024 at Edinburgh Sports Club. Tickets to watch the event will go on sale from Friday 1^st March and will be available at www.edinburghsportsclub.co.uk.
